Qigong is not the original name, it should be called Nei Gong, which is close to chinese medicine. Books such as Nei Jing ( Internal Medicine ) talk about purely Nei Ke ( Learning of internal physiology ), the very ancient chinese human biology and physiology and with spiritual thingy and Feng shui thingy and all the isms thrown in. You see ! Its all Nei Nei Nei.

Qigong is old, as old as Chinese history, but older than Chai Lun invented paper and Mong Tien invented writing brush. So I should say Qigong is older than chinese history. When the 44 Drawings of people doing exercises of famous Ma Huang Dai Scroll ( West Han ) which unearthed in the 70's Qigong has already Chinese people's kara ok or as popular as Jane Founder's dance. Because Qigong was and is everything we need in our daily life.

As Professor Jiao Guorui's book said: "Qigong is an outstanding cultural legacy of ancient China, is also an important part of traditional chinese medicine (TCM). Qigong is a prophylactic method which is unique to china. The aim of Qigong exercise is preventing and curing diseases, strenthening the constitution, avoiding premature aging, and prolonging life..." One important thingy he didn't mention is Qigong is the best way and the cheapest way and the fun way to be a cosmatic ( beauty ) treatment.

In mainland China during the 80's and 90's, there was Qigong madness that large and small qigong schools were opened like fashion of bamboo shoots after a spring rain, unfortunately many so called masters jumped into qigong band wagons, and on the other  real masters suffered ...

Since one ordinary qigong called Hualungong stood up awkwardly like sore thumb that displeases the government, eventually given bad name to all qigong schools, causing quite a bit of discomfort for all of us. Very sad, I think the Chinese government sure should handle this better. I hope time will tell and people will realise that no fault is on qigong. As the saying "although the tree has oblique shadow under the sunset but will not affect its upright righteousness".
